Reading Skills and PARP

Jan 12 2012 Published by under Senator James H Donovan

In a world where technology has such a strong hold, it is important to cultivate non-electronic, educational activities into children’s lives. Reading has become more of a chore and less of a pastime because, while it is rewarding, it does not give immediate results the way computer games do. Senator James Donovan, known for his 14 year role as chairman of the Senate Education Committee, understood the importance of reading education at a young age.

In an effort to increase enjoyment of the activity, Jim Donovan initiated a program called Parents As Reading Partners, or PARP, which encourages parents to spend time with their child every day for a reading session. By taking turns, the child’s reading skills are developed in a stress- free, comfortable environment, while the parent-child relationship is strengthened as well.

Parents as Reading Partners

Dec 01 2011 Published by under Senate Work

Senator James H. Donovan served as chairman of the US Senate Education Committee for 14 years. During that time, he instituted a program called Parents as Reading Partners, or PARP, to encourage children to read on a regular basis.

The program suggests that parents spend at least fifteen minutes each day reading with their child, taking turns reading aloud. In this way, children are less likely to become frustrated and discouraged, and will also form a stronger bond with their parents. Children may be encouraged to open up about their feelings on the book, school, social lives and more.

Senator James Donovan and Learning to Read

Jun 04 2011 Published by under Senator James H Donovan

Senator James H. Donovan founded a program called PARP, which stands for Parents As Reading Partners. Since he was very involved with the educational system and its programs, Jim Donovan witnessed first-hand the difficulties that children encountered while learning to read comfortably, and enlisted PARP as a means to help.

The program encourages parents to read out loud with their child for at least fifteen minutes every day. The experience is meant to introduce children to the joys of reading, showing them that it can be an enjoyable activity. The practice will also often boost the relationship between the child and parents. So that the child does not feel embarrassed, frustrated or discouraged, they should not read alone. Parents are encouraged to take turns reading aloud with their child. Today, the program has been integrated into many schools and education systems.

Parents as Reading Partners: James H. Donovan

Oct 24 2010 Published by under General, Senator James H Donovan

We all know the importance of learning to read. Reading can broaden children’s horizons and enhance their imaginations, but it also has a huge role in the rest of their lives. Every activity, education and career path or job requires good reading skills. By making reading an enjoyable activity in children’s lives, we can instill these skills in children at a young age, and encourage them to continue reading and expanding their vocabularies as they grow older.

Senator James H. Donovan recognized this, and started a program called PARP- Parents as Reading Partners as a means to achieve this goal. He believed that if parents spent at least 15 minutes each day to read with their child, the child would both enjoy reading and acquire the skills necessary to succeed academically.  The child need not read alone- the reading should alternate between the child and the parent, so that the child does not get discouraged if he or she is having difficulty reading. This method does not only help instill reading skills, it also increases parent involvement in the child’s life and may encourage the child to express his or her opinions about the book, school and more. This program has been adopted by a great number of schools and parents on their own, and is helping children everywhere.
